Musings & Memories Montage
Telling My Stories and Discovering Your Stories
Thursday Thirteen #12
03/23/07

As you will discover over the next few days ... I'm kind of sort of homesick ... as in I'd love to go back to North and East Texas for a little Spring visit.

If anyone is in the vicinity of the Main Street Fort Worth Arts Festival on April 19-22, please check out these thirteen artists for me. I have thirteen photographers to put up next week for you to check out.

If you are not going to be in the vicinity, you should check these artists out anyway. Many have web sites listed where you can go purchase their items without attending (like me!).

If you aren't familiar with the Main Street Fort Worth Arts Festival, it is a juried event that has national and international artists competing for the opportunity to show (sell). Here, let me just do some Texas style bragging...
Mark your calendar now for the 2007 show, scheduled for April 19 - 22, 2007 here in beautiful Fort Worth, TX. Also, note the Harris List has just released their rankings for 2006, and we're proud to once again rank as the #1 Fine Art and Fine Craft Fair in Texas, #5 in the midwest and #9 in the country! Also, the Art Fair SourceBook has just announced their rankings, and have rated us #10 in the country. Finally, for the first time, we have been listed in the Top Show List of the Harris List of the Nation's Best Arts and Craft Shows, ranking #7 Fine Arts and Craft Show in the Nation.
(Retrieved from a Google cache or their home page earlier in the year. --Thank You Google!)

So ... without further ado I present

A Thursday Thirteen and Sleeping with Bread Meme Mush-up
02/24/07

I didn't get to do a Sleeping with Bread post last Monday and I'm running late to stay within the Thursday 13 window. So, what with creative desperation being the mother of mush-up's, here we go.

Thirteen Observations from Attempting to Read the Bible in 90 Days.

Blessings

1) Ruth's devotion to her mother-in-law -- moreover the kind of lady Naomi had to be in order for both of her daughter-in-law's to resist leaving her -- but Ruth was the more determined of the two.
But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me." (Ruth 1:16)
2) Boaz's care for Ruth. People tend to read the book of Ruth and only see Ruth's devotion to Naomi. But I'm telling you ... The next time you read Ruth notice that that Boaz was one gentleman who knew how to make a lady feel cared for and protected. Many first dates don't go as well as their first meeting. I do not think the idea suddenly leapt into his heart to marry Ruth because she came to him and presented the idea. Nope his actions the very next morning indicate to me that he had been pondering his options.

3) Hannah's prayer for a child. She did not say "O Lord, I'm wonderful with so much to give to a child. Please let me create a child in my own image to play with and shape and enjoy." Instead she simply proclaimed her misery, asked for a blessing, and promised the Lord what was already His -- since the first son was to be consecrated to God. (Exodus 13:2). Hanna did go much further, though, by sending Samuel to live and work with the priest Eli.
"O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."
Before Hanna went to pray though there was a shift in her actions. Hannah redirected her emotional energy. She stopped pouring it out before her rival and instead poured it out before God.

4)Extra blessings for Hanna. Have you ever noticed ... have you ever asked for the opportunity to be blessed in such a way as to be able to make a sacrifice -- for God &/or another person? Isn't it amazing what happens when we get that blessing and we get to make that sacrifice? Well, yeah, it feels great to get to help someone ... but ... do you notice that God seems to enjoy throwing in some extra blessings on a pretty regular basis?
Samuel was ministering before the LORD -- a boy wearing a linen ephod. Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, "May the LORD give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to the LORD." Then they would go home. And the LORD was gracious to Hannah; she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD. (I Samuel 2:18-21)

5) Samuel learning to listen to God and proof that parents (and others raising children) do not have to be perfect all of the time ... IF they can teach their children to listen when God speaks. ((I Samuel 3:9)

6) David's declaration to Goliath. There are times ya gotta know when to show up for the fight ... and you need to know when it's not really going to be your victory.
"You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, ... for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give all of you into our hands." ((I Samuel 17:45-47)

7) David's diligent seeking of God's will. Over and over David consulted with God about whether or not to go into battle.

8) An unexpected Psalm in the midst of Samuel. 2 Samuel 22 (I thought they were only in Psalms)

9) The fact that even though Moses and David messed it up big time, their sins do not keep them from the presence of God ... as soon as they repent, God continues to show up in their lives ... carrying them through the consequences of their sins ... and ... then welcomes them into eternity and posterity with blessings. I'll have to share more of this with you later.

Disconcerting

10) That even though Samuel had been serving with Eli, Eli hadn't taught Samuel about listening for God.
Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD : The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. (I Samuel 3:7)
How can this be? How could Samuel serve through all the rituals and not know? And, yet, how many of us do the same thing?

11) Even though Samuel watched Eli lose blessings and gain curses because of his son's behavior, Samuel's sons behaved in the same way -- to the point that the people even sited their dishonest ways as a reason for a king.

It surprises me but this sort of failure with the kids seems to be the norm rather than the exception. Very disconcerting.

12) It seems David eventually stopped consulting God about every battle. I wasn't paying strict attention to this when I read it through ... but ... it seems that David handed the warring over to Joab ... along with some dirty work 2 Samuel 11. I don't remember exactly how the story ends ... I just finished the psalm in 2 Samuel 22 ... but I suspect betrayal lurking in the heart of Joab -- if not of David, himself, then some sort of trouble with Solomon. We will see.

13) Letting things stand as a mystery ... like ... why did the men marry so many wives (what were they thinking!?) ... and why did Samuel say "God doesn't change his mind" when He did in fact change His mind several times regarding, oh, say, starting the whole project over with just Moses. And all this constant warring -- at annihilation level. This list doesn't even begin to touch the mystery list ... most especially the list of items under the heading of "people, teachers, preachers say ... but the Bible says ..."

But I can't handle the geography being a mystery. I've got to locate some maps that have these old places labeled!

The Sleeping with Bread meme is propagated by Mary of Life, the Universe and Everything. It gives us a chance to pause and consider God's blessings and a chance to evaluate what is giving us pause or grief.

An Apology to Mother and to all IE Users
02/23/07

More lessons in web design.

Well ... Wednesday night my DaughterV IM'd me and announced that she also couldn't see my Thursday Thirteen banner (from last week).

We muddled through it a bit and compared notes and made sure we were both on the same page and finally I also saw the disappearing act that the banner was pulling. DaughterV said, "Yeah, you're just going to have to report it missing from coast to coast ... well, no, really it's more like that Bermuda Triangle thing -- Oregon, New York, Texas ... "

Welllll it turns out that I messed up my HTML code and I could see my Thursday Thirteen banner with Firefox and the Mac browser, uh Safari(?), could also see it. Microsoft's Internet Explorer ... Yeah ... No so fortunate.

So, again, I'm forced to look at something that has caused me issues before. I do not have a blogging system ... I don't have it down to where I can put it in a flowchart and follow it. I have a few portions of it charted out but then I get sloppy and start thinking I don't have to follow it because ... uh ... I'm good? Okay. We won't go there.

One of the most basic rules of web design is: Always check your work in multiple browsers. I've routinely done this when I'm changing the design lay out but ... what I failed to remember is that every post is a design element that deserves to at least a glance in that IE thing.

So I'm working again on my flowcharts and trust me ... "Check IE" is on the board.

And for my mother ... I am sorry I ever doubted that the photo of me on the car wasn't there ... but I know how advertising resistant I am from growing up with ya'll ... so much so that I honestly thought that you just glanced right over it like I do with advertising that shows up in the middle of the blog. Trust me ... I'm not complaining about being advertising resistant. It saves me a lot of eye strain, time and, of course, money.

For everyone else who uses Internet Explorer ... hey, get Firefox ... LOL ... no no really, I'm sorry and I promise to double ck my posts from now on. Oh and I fixed the Still Me after all this Time post. Now everyone can see how adorable I was sitting on the trunk of the car.

Thursday Thirteen #10 -- Still Me After All This Time
02/15/07

Hmmm Well I lost grip on the good laptop and my hard drive today! I had to work on rebel and had no access to my hard drive because Billy ended up using it to run his connection to work.

What? The really short version? Billy's Windows on his hard drive closed up shop and left town. Mine still worked. So Billy used mine to work from home today. See?

So I had no access to my writing nor my photos. BUT I did have access to my email. AND one of the good things that happened this week is that my dad found a certain photo that I wanted -- plus he and my mom sat down and pulled together a whole selection for me! So ... I had more than 13 photos in my email ... and so that's what you're getting to see today. And, yes, of course, there's a story or two or three.

Each image opens a larger image. This time there is no compelling reason to open the larger image unless you want to see a little better.

At the bottom of this post you'll find a link to a photo page on my site where you can just click through the titles in order. That way you won't have to keep jumping back and forth between the images here and the larger images there.

My Dad and Me

When I opened my email, we were at Starbucks. Billy was with me and he said, "Oh wow! Look at all these old pictures! They've Got to be More than Fifty years old!" People, I'm not quite 50 yet. He got a smack in the arm.

Still, wow ... my dad sure looks young in that picture!

The next five photos are a series. My mom took them back in the days when it was work to take photos. She got busy with more kids after this day and let my dad do most of the photography. But recently she got her own digital camera. I'm very pleased about that.

Waiting for my Daddy

See, the first thing that happened when I started looking at these pics is that I keep hearing bits and pieces of ideas and conversations. So I'm going to tell you what I think is true ... and then I'll get my parents to show up and set the record straight (the way they remember).

This car is the one and only car that my parents had at the time. I think it might be the one that my dad nearly lost me (before I was born) and my mom out of because it was new and back then you were suppose to work the door handle a certain way to lock the door. Well my mom misunderstood and the door opened as they rounded a corner. My dad grabbed her by the arm and kept her!

I also think maybe my mom learned to drive in this car ... maybe ... I'm 99% sure she learned after they got married ... I think.

Also, I think it was a daily habit for me to watch for my dad. Annnnyway ... The way my dad most likely got home this day was a ride from his brother. They worked at the same place.

Tightening the Wheel

My husband finds it amusing (in a good way) that to this day I still like to understand what's going on with the car and I like to watch him work on them (when we own one). Often, I'm the first to know something is wrong with our car because I learned to listen to them from my dad. I also learned to smell them. I was usually first to know when the heater core was going out ... or a water hose /pump. Back when the fuel pumps were exposed, I'd smell them starting to leak long before anybody else. And this sort of day is where it all began.

What? Actually get my hands dirty working on one? No. But I'll hand you tools and hold the flashlight!

Pit Crew needs Help

My Fashion Sense

I thought this was the funniest photo in the batch because it looks like my mom was trying to make sure I still knew about girl stuff. I'm pretty sure I was making a face about the sun. I actually do like girl stuff. But I find it even more interesting because my mom has a degree in commercial art. Her portfolio is full of dresses and ensembles she drew. But she didn't go to work drawing dresses.

My Mom & Me

At first I thought I just looked tired but I also thought I looked kind of irritated with something. Then I noticed my mom was filing my nails. Which reminded me ... when I was little bitty, I crawled up to my dad and tried to blind him. Oh ok really I scratched him in the eye with one of my little fingernails. He ended up having to go to the eye doc.

Careful Consideration

So what my mom ended up doing was drawing architectural drawings for a really nice man named Mr. Bliss ... I kid you not. (I hope I'm not kidding at any rate.) When I was a baby, my mom would take me to work with her. When I first looked at the photos in Starbucks, I told Billy that's where I was.

But today I see that that is a chanell (sp?!) bedspread ... and I think that dark little box with a long tail is my dad's light meter.

So ... my mom was a WAHM? (That's "Work at Home Mom") I'll have to check the facts on that.

Anyway, would you believe that when I got married, my mom's old boss, Mr. Bliss, and his wife came? Work relationships just don't last like that anymore.

Moreover, my mother is like me (or I'm like her) in that she gets stuck on the very fine details. When she lets go, let me tell you ... it's art! So Mr. Bliss would tell her, "Every time you think of it, hurry a little." So. That's what she taught me. And I still find myself saying those words to myself from time to time.

Brushing My Cares Away

My Dad's Dad

Above and below are my dad's parents. I remember them as always working on something. My grandfather was one of the first diesel truck mechanics ever and my grandmother always had a garden and she cooked a lot. I remember their kitchen smelled of her pie crusts and meats and his coffee and cigarettes.

Have ya'll noticed yet that I do not pose well for photographs with other people? I suspect I was probably trying to get loose to go play in their yard. I loved their yard so much. Always.

My Dad's Mom

My Mom's Dad & Mom

These are my mom's parents. I still have in my possession little bitty squares of paper that I use to write letters on ... little bitty squiggles. Then I would fold them up and put them in a little bitty mail box. Then my grandmother would take them out and read them.

I have to say that I feel exceedingly blessed to have known my grandparents -- all of them. They were always "in my corner." I was spoiled. True. I also knew there rules and regs ... balances and measures -- And they helped to keep me pretty balanced.

So Cute. Asleep!

Usually I napped in my baby bed. This dog had a name. I carried that critter until it was threadbare!

My parents love to tell about how when it was time for my nap, my mom would put me in my bed. There would be some stuffed animals and toys in there. I would sit up and play until I was ready to sleep. Then they'd hear kerplunk kerplunk as I dropped each toy overboard until my bed had no clutter. Then I'd sleep. I'm assuming I did not throw the dog over though.

Posing

Oh look! I'm posing ... and no one else is in the photo ... but oh look ... I was talking ... imagine that! ooh and if I recall someone called a "professional" (whom my mother was not impressed with) took this photo ... isn't that just typical of a kid?

Teaching Sunday School -- 3yrs

This is the bonus photo. When I got to this one, I thought about how fortunate I was to have such good influences in my life -- so many people for me to model after. Obviously, I must have had an inspirational Sunday School Teacher.

But then I was looking at how I was looking at the doll in my arms and I thought for an oldest and only I was doing a great job of being concerned for my baby. LOL but then I realized ... yeah ... I'm pretty sure that's my brother's stroller over on the right of the photo. Pretty sure my mom was doing a great job of modeling baby care.

But see ... here's something else. Even if I'm off and that's not my brother's stroller, the other thing that came floating back to me is that my mother and her mother both made sure that we kids KNEW how to play.

They played with us and gave us ideas and help and above all ... once we got into it, they didn't mess us up ... they got out of the way.

~~~
In the final summary, I realized I'm still me after all this time. I still love the mechanical and the artistic and the photographic ... and I love to learn and love to teach ... OH and I still love having an audience!
Ok alright! If you want, go see the larger images. There's a link on that photo page so you can come back and leave a comment.
MarillaAnne's Appalachian Trail Thursday 13 #9
02/08/07
Ok this week once again had no web focus. I don't mean I wasn't on the Internet. I mean I was and yet had no focus. So ... you get more photos to focus on.
Each image opens a larger image. This time there is no compelling reason to open the larger image unless you want to see a little better.
At the bottom of this post you'll find a link to a photo page on my site where you can just click through the titles in order. That way you won't have to keep jumping back and forth between the images here and the larger images there.
I really know very little about the Appalachian Trail ... So again ... feel free to fill me in.
Snow Strolling
Twice now we've taken the trail west from the Appalachian Trail train platform on the Harlem Line. The trail eventually turns south over towards the Hudson River. I love this portion of the trail because even though it starts out looking rather la-de-da and oh so normal ...
Beam Balancing / Grass Stalking
It soon turns into a trek through the swamp ... designed to challenge your balance. Yes that's a balancing beam. In the fall, it's not frozen on the right side. And I also love those really tall grasses. I have no idea what they are. Do you?
Cinder Striding
Then we have cinder blocks to walk on. No, the swamp isn't frozen in that spot and, yes, one slip and it would have been very cold.
Beam Bopping / Pallet Prowling
One of my very favorite turns through the stalking grass includes a cinder block to beam to pallet transfer. Billy went in in the fall -- not so cold then but still he was glad it was on the way back to the train.
Post Meeting
White stripes like this on poles, trees, and rocks mark the trail. This pole has at least two faces. Do you see them?
Plank Walking
And then we get two planks to walk on for a distance. This trip the swamp was fairly frozen in this portion. Last trip Shelbie dog loved wading in the water.
Creek Bridging
Then we cross a little creek on a nicely maintained bridge. The light changes very rapidly up here unlike in Texas (Very bright) or in Oregon (very dim) ... so I ended up with two very dark snaps of the bridge.
Bridge Posing
Then Billy saw his chance for a shot at of me.
Green Glistening
This is an attempt to capture the creek (again). The water is only green in appearance because of the vegetation. It is actually very clear.
Twig Catching
It fascinated me how the snow could pile up like that on litttttle slender branches / twigs.
White Wandering
Oh, I forgot to tell you ... after the bridge there's a steady climb up a hill. I believe we are going to have to get a very decent map of the trail so we can talk about elevations and the like. Anyway the trees are as beautiful dressed in snow as they are in fall colors.
Winter Farming
This is the scene once you are over the top of the hill. Let me tell you ... it was Blinding White!
Hotwire Hopping
So we thought we'd only be out until the 2:41 train but we dawdled around and missed it by almost 1/2 an hour. There are two hours between trains. The only way we were going to survive well was to keep moving. So we left the train platform again but went east. It is also very pretty over that way. We had enough time to go over a few hills.
Oh that thing that Billy's standing on ... those are ladders that allow hikers to go over electric fence wires. I think we went over four going and again coming back. They are not designed for short legged people!
Locomotion Waiting
Bonus ... the one that got away! So very frustrating. We got back to the train platform and I wanted to take a pic of the train coming down the track at us. I took some test shots. The sun was starting to set a bit. It was going to be perfect. And so ... the train came into view and ... I raised my camera ... and ... I saw ... a red battery outline and then ... fade to black. sigh
Ok finally! Go see the larger images. There's a link on that photo page so you can come back and leave a comment.
MarillaAnne's Grand Central Station Thursday Thirteen #8
02/01/07
These pics are from when Billy & I went down to NYC on Christmas Eve. I figured they would be appropriate for today because I am going down to Grand Central Station today to pick up my cell phone. It has been living down there in the "Lost and Found" since ohhh ... mid December. Yes. Mid December. Yes it's still there. Billy called and checked.
I offer up my apologies to anyone who is on dial up but ... I couldn't bear to make the images any smaller because Grand Central Station is soooo beautiful. And yes I'm taking my camera with me again.
Each image opens a larger image that is usually different from the small one here. I think you would find it worth the effort. BUT, personally, if I were you, I would only look at these here (and somehow avoid the compulsion to click on an image).
Why? Because ... down at the bottom of this post you'll find a very useful link. It will take you to a photo page where you can just click through the titles in order. That way you won't have to keep jumping back and forth between the images here and the larger images there.
Basically I don't know anything about Grand Central Station except what you see here. So feel free to fill me in.
The image above and below is of the front of Grand Central. Evidently if you are going to "meet me under the clock," this is The Clock. That's Tiffany Glass in that thar face. Isn't it beautiful?
This eagle sits on the corner of 42nd and something. I don't know. I was just following Billy around and pointing the camera. A Lot.
Ok the name of this next image is "Huge is Huge." When you go look at the larger image, you will understand why when I went in for the first time I just had to stop and stare and turn and stare and turn and stare ... for at least ten minutes.
All of the lighting I noticed was incandescent. Chandeliers are everywhere and if it's not a chandelier, it is ensconced in some of the most beautiful brass work.
And let's not forget the marble ... carvings so beautiful and shineeey that I was tempted to think of them as a plastic! (How bad is that?!) It's very difficult to photograph. I'm hoping to get more of this today.
Everywhere you look there's some sort of "eye-candy" design
The image below and it's larger version are of a light show that was shown inside the building all of the Christmas season. It was like a kaleidoscope of familiar items in Grand Central and I think you'll find a very well known landmark in the large version.(But remember, don't click yet!)
We left for awhile and then came back. We had about an hour until our train. So we watched the light show and the clock upstairs (that's mother of pearl on that face!)
Then we went downstairs where we could sit down to watch the time some more
Then we got on the right track
And boarded our departing train
Ok finally! Go see the larger images. There's a link on that photo page so you can come back and leave a comment.
I'll be checking in here and there throughout the day to make sure the comments are working out for you. AND I look forward to visiting ya'll tomorrow (Are you kidding? Miss out on your lists?)
This week more people standing in need of prayer and generosity and all the while incredible stories spin all around them.
Update: The incredible story for Kelli has taken a new turn. Please continue to the list for a few details! 01/13/07
And ... I made a startling discovery about myself. And I'm over-committed and believe you should be, also. Well, I wouldn't want you to be bored.
I've not been out on the web as much as usual since Billy was home on vacation. We just kept finding lots of things to do. Go figure.
So on Tuesday afternoon I kind of panicked. I had exactly precisely ONE del.icio.us tag for this week: Sophie's post (below). So ... I decided it was time for "a one hour tour." "A one hour tour" means that I start at one site and just start surfing about ... with the goal of leaving each site rather quickly. I'm horrible at the quickly part as you will see...
Leave a comment for Jaymun's family. Encouragement and company is always welcome.
Do you know anyone who needs to write a thank you note? There's help in the list.
Also there's just some interesting people working at crafting their lives.
This week very naturally leaned (once again) toward Christmas. I included one of our long time favorites: Popular Front's Snow Days. But this year they surprised me by contributing to Salvation Army based on the number of flakes made ... so get thee and all of thy relatives over there and have some fun and give give give.
And as usual, I found more stories to follow. Kelli (Living in Grace) is beginning her search for a kidney. Kim (Embracing Momminess) poignantly reminds us of who we are (and who we can be) as Americans by telling the story of her family's loss and a community's support. Please read both stories and leave them comments. Oh go on ... you can spare a few facial tissues and a little time and care. Yes. You can.
And some stories attacked me (that doll thing still hurts!) ... and some I just bumped into.
Every day I bump into the most amazing things on the Internet. But there's no way I can blog about them all ... until I mushed up the Thursday Thirteen and del.icio.us linkroll.
This week pay special attention to what BooMama's church is doing. And could us "intellectual-types" "goody-two-shoes-types" please get out and mingle over at YouTube and make good stuff "buzzy," too?
