MarillaAnne's Grand Central Station Thursday Thirteen #8
02/01/07

These pics are from when Billy & I went down to NYC on Christmas Eve. I figured they would be appropriate for today because I am going down to Grand Central Station today to pick up my cell phone. It has been living down there in the "Lost and Found" since ohhh ... mid December. Yes. Mid December. Yes it's still there. Billy called and checked.

I offer up my apologies to anyone who is on dial up but ... I couldn't bear to make the images any smaller because Grand Central Station is soooo beautiful. And yes I'm taking my camera with me again.

Each image opens a larger image that is usually different from the small one here. I think you would find it worth the effort. BUT, personally, if I were you, I would only look at these here (and somehow avoid the compulsion to click on an image).

Why? Because ... down at the bottom of this post you'll find a very useful link. It will take you to a photo page where you can just click through the titles in order. That way you won't have to keep jumping back and forth between the images here and the larger images there.

Basically I don't know anything about Grand Central Station except what you see here. So feel free to fill me in.

The image above and below is of the front of Grand Central. Evidently if you are going to "meet me under the clock," this is The Clock. That's Tiffany Glass in that thar face. Isn't it beautiful?

This eagle sits on the corner of 42nd and something. I don't know. I was just following Billy around and pointing the camera. A Lot.

Ok the name of this next image is "Huge is Huge." When you go look at the larger image, you will understand why when I went in for the first time I just had to stop and stare and turn and stare and turn and stare ... for at least ten minutes.

All of the lighting I noticed was incandescent. Chandeliers are everywhere and if it's not a chandelier, it is ensconced in some of the most beautiful brass work.

And let's not forget the marble ... carvings so beautiful and shineeey that I was tempted to think of them as a plastic! (How bad is that?!) It's very difficult to photograph. I'm hoping to get more of this today.

Everywhere you look there's some sort of "eye-candy" design

The image below and it's larger version are of a light show that was shown inside the building all of the Christmas season. It was like a kaleidoscope of familiar items in Grand Central and I think you'll find a very well known landmark in the large version.(But remember, don't click yet!)

We left for awhile and then came back. We had about an hour until our train. So we watched the light show and the clock upstairs (that's mother of pearl on that face!)

Then we went downstairs where we could sit down to watch the time some more

Then we got on the right track

And boarded our departing train

Ok finally! Go see the larger images. There's a link on that photo page so you can come back and leave a comment.

I'll be checking in here and there throughout the day to make sure the comments are working out for you. AND I look forward to visiting ya'll tomorrow (Are you kidding? Miss out on your lists?)

I enjoy your comments. And I want you to enjoy reading each other's comments. To that end purpose, I moderate comments. If you're impatient, MeeboMe.

Commenting Ideas
  • If you do not have a blog or site, skip the "web site" line, pull a name or "handle" out of your head, write a note, push the button. (No excuses!)
  • If this entry reminds you of a story of a similar place in time in your life, you are welcome to tell your story.
  • If you discover your story is taking more than 3 or 4 paragraphs (and if you have a place on the web for your writings), I will not be insulted if you take your story back and finish it at your own site. But then I will be disappointed if you don't come back and leave me a summary of your story and a link -- in the comments.
  • If you have already written a story about a similar place in time, please feel free to leave a summary and a link.
  • It's never too late to make a comment or tell a story.

I hope this works out. For today moderation is turned off so your comment will show up right away.

Be sure to promote your Thursday 13 for others who are visiting. Well, and so I can come visit tonight or tomorrow.

Have fun!

You know, they just don't make buildings with such attention to architectural detail anymore. Where have all the artisans gone? It's really a shame, too. All this glass without class.

Very cool photos!

Hi there! The photos are beautiful! I had no idea that Grand Central Station was so beautiful.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to your question, but yes, I would be interested in your opinion of the book you are reading. (The one that you talked about in my comments)

No Thursday `13 for me again today. :( I have to work again today. But I'll be back next week! :)

These are truly beautiful pictures and it makes me want to go to New York City... NOW!

It is a building of a completely different sort, but the Getty Museum is stunning in its own way. There are just oodles and oodles of Travertine marble and such. It is definitely worth a look-see. Maybe I'll just have to go back so I can do my own TT post, Getty edition!

I love the shot of the chandelier! Also the one of the carving. Its has so much texture and depth - I really want to touch it.

Carol - I agree with you that it is a shame that architecture does not have the same amount of detail and care.

Mary-Lou - I want to go to NY NOW too!

"Grand Central Station. It's grand and it's central." - Marty (the zebra) from Madagascar.

Come visit my first TT at: http://violetkey.wordpress.com/

P.S. Do i have to write code to link in your comments?

And Hello from the Starbucks in Grand Central Terminal (not station ... to be corrected!) It is great to be down here ... I just wish I could put all my stuff down ... and it's soooo warm in here!

Soon my cell phone will be recharged and I'll start roaming the halls with my camera ... I'll have to be sure and set an alarm so I don't forget to leave while my ticket is still good! (off peak)

Ohh and I think I'll ck and see about getting to the right track ;~)

Let's see ... Yes, Carol it just slays me to walk around the archetecture here in Grand Central and in NYC and every small town and city, too! I think I'll practice slowing down and getting decent shots of things that catch my eye.

Mary-Lou If you come up, I'll buy an an air mattres for my living room .... and i'll move the boxes out of there

YES V my stuff is still in the boxes ... except for the stuff I've dug out! Billy could be right with his apple theory!

And yes you have to put the HTML code around your addy ... meebo me sometime and i'll tell you the name of the plug-in that I use for that ... I just don't want to look for it.

Ok

Ok Well now I'm in Mt. Kisco. They were working on the Internet connection at the Starbucks in GCT and so ... I ended up with all kinds of wacky stuff ...

Soooo Chickadee ...

I think I will start one of the two next week. I'll keep you up to date on that adventure.

And did you know that you can post a Thursday 13 as late as Saturday? So, if there's something burning in your heart, go for it!

It really is very beautiful. it must be an old building. The new ones are never so artistic.. all the artwork is usually huge, nowadays there is very little time spent on intricate work...

~ Hi! Yes. It is an old building. And, like you, I can't get over how many little pieces of art there are all over the building. ~pam

Hi there...y'know, somehow I landed on an old TT of yours, and made a comment before I realized it was an old one! My first clue should have been that it had some Christmas-related stuff on it!

Anyway, I found the right one. The pictures are GORGEOUS. I love NYC, and this makes me want to go back!

My TT is up too.

~ Cindy, don't worry about it. It happens often here (sometimes I move the comments for people) and I've commented on the wrong T13 at other's blogs as well.

When you come back, give me a holler.

I am glad that you are enjoying NY. The pics are not bad either even on dial up.

The following is for Chickadee: Pam's mother has a pet name. Guess what it is. Yes, Chickadee. There is a funny story behind it. There is not enough room to put it here but she is a real sport about letting me call her by her pet name. Brings back good memories.

~ LOL, it's true, Chickadee. I always think of you as family because my dad calls my mom Chickadee -- but not just my mom. Evidently he's not aware that he calls me and my girls Chickadee from time to time, too. But my mom is the one who got it started. ~pam

Wow, these are stunning. Fun to have your up-to-the minute eye-witness report to accompany the photos too! We went to NYC for the first time in the spring of 2001. Now I know exactly where I'll go when we go back. :~)

Please visit my TT here when you get the chance. Blessings.

~ e-Mom, It will be well worth it! Drop me a note when you go maybe we could meet up. ~pam
