Musings & Memories Montage
Telling My Stories and Discovering Your Stories

A Linked Path
03/20/09

I am often amused and amazed by my wanderings on the Internet. Today I'll show you one path.

Today I logged into my Plurk account. I like Plurk. Mostly it's my more crazy friends from SL. So mostly ... it's a wild-side group. And, along the way, I've been picking up a few people that I just follow.

One person I follow is: alexdc. He teaches about social networks and posted a Plurk about the slide show he presented at SXSW 2009: Breaking News at Breakneck Speed. It is a demonstrative collection of examples of how being connected to "the collective" (my term) is the way to be in the know.

So then I noticed his slide presentation: Social Media-Q&A, tutorial, best practices, etc. One idea is to develop two consistent profile names -- one for personal and one for business. Following that idea is to allow one social network be for acquaintances, one for work, one for very close friends, etc. And I realized that I like both these ideas and might consider taking on the first one. BUT the second idea of grouping people by networks ... that one is happening naturally. My SL friends (mostly) on Plurk vs my Facebook account which is mostly "physical world" people I encounter, long time friends, and family.

This thought brought me back to my original goal ... ck the email and the social stuff ... and then onward. So I logged into Facebook. It's a mostly quiet day with the group. So far. Although ... Laurie is thrilled that Ron is returning from a 3wk round in Korea. He's with the Air Force National Guard.

One of the things I do is train Facebook regarding the ads I want to see and, Most Especially, the ads I don't want to see. Facebook actually has a thumbs up and thumbs down system that allows me to have a say. I like that. I use it. A lot.

So a facebook ad led me to: Home Photography's first online magazine at issuu.com/ (a very nice online publishing tool). It was enjoyable to read and had some helpful bits in it ... one was about tree frogs. This made me smile.

Of course, I didn't just read one "magazine" on issuu.com. I poked through several. One was a publication promoting new books from a certain publisher. I noticed the page about The Blue Handbag by Fiona Robyn. I noticed that she is a prolific blogger. I noticed a mention of a small stone. I visited. I smiled. I remembered tree frogs.

Remembering tree frogs and short thoughts together made me remember to go back and check on a little haiku I wrote last night. A little springtime celebration dance.

Enjoy have fun!

I enjoy your comments. And I want you to enjoy reading each other's comments. To that end purpose, I moderate comments. If you're impatient, MeeboMe.

Commenting Ideas
  • If you do not have a blog or site, skip the "web site" line, pull a name or "handle" out of your head, write a note, push the button. (No excuses!)
  • If this entry reminds you of a story of a similar place in time in your life, you are welcome to tell your story.
  • If you discover your story is taking more than 3 or 4 paragraphs (and if you have a place on the web for your writings), I will not be insulted if you take your story back and finish it at your own site. But then I will be disappointed if you don't come back and leave me a summary of your story and a link -- in the comments.
  • If you have already written a story about a similar place in time, please feel free to leave a summary and a link.
  • It's never too late to make a comment or tell a story.

My website is largely my memoir ... my musings, photos, encounters, life's stories.

But what really thrills me is that when I let go of my stories, it's like sending out little sail boats out on expeditions. Very often they come back to me filled with other people's stories. Continue...
